Notes from a Black Woman's Diary: Selected Works of Kathleen Collins, by Kathleen Collins.
This was one of my favorite books I’ve ever read. I specifically enjoyed Kathleen’s gradual divorce from memoirs as she got older, when she realized her life was enough by itself and didn’t need a co-conspirator to legitimize its moments. I saw myself in her eventual divestment from centering men in her works of fiction because, as she put it, she was going to live “regardless” — with or without one. She was a brilliant inspector of herself, and I’m so grateful to have found the most beautiful of her thoughts.
